  • Verbatim DVD-R optical disc(100)

  • Why Verbatim

Verbatim has been trusted for over 50 years to provide reliable and affordable data storage products and is the leading brand of optical media sold today.

Verbatim prides itself on producing optical media compatible with more drive manufacturers than any other brand in the world, giving our customers better disc burns at rated drive speeds.

    Why Optical

Optical discs have a higher long-term reliability than other types of data storage devices. And with long-term archival options, optical media can have lifetimes of hundreds of years.

With better backwards compatibility than tape, flash, or cloud storage, data stored on optical media can be accessed for many years to come.

With data security being a bigger concern than ever, storing important information on physical media lets you take control of your data.

Some optical discs are read-only, meaning once data is written, it cannot be altered, further protecting your data

Optical media remains the most affordable form of storage with an extremely low cost per MB.

    Backup v. Archive

The difference between backing-up your data and archiving your data is subtle, but important. Backing-up data is usually done on a daily or weekly basis, to account for any edits or additions you have made. Archiving is a more permanent solution – ideally, you archive data a few times a year and it remains safe for years to come.

Optical media is the ideal media for archiving. It is durable enough to last for years and takes up less physical storage space. The random access file retrieval makes finding data faster and easier. And with better backwards compatibility, data stored on optical media can be accessed for many years to come.

Who Can Use Optical Media as a Long-Term Archival Solution?

    Government/Official Agencies

    • Find specific records quickly and easily
    • Read-only discs prevent data from being altered or stolen
    • Store records locally or offsite, with low cost of ownership, and a small storage footprint

    Medical Institutions

    • Securely store patients records and files while maintaining quick access
    • Long term solution perfect for compliance archival requirements
    • Ideal for x-rays, MRI records and other detailed imagery

    Businesses/Financial Institutions

    • Data is stored off-network and out of reach of data attacks
    • Maintain access to files for years to come with exceptional forward and backward compatibility

    Individuals

    • Keep your important files safe and away from attackers
    • Optical discs are extremely affordable and take up less physical space than other data storage devices

    What is AZO Technology?

    Ultra-Stable

Verbatim’s AZO recording layer is a unique and ultra-stable layer with a high resistance to UV light degradation while withstanding high laser and rotation speeds. Verbatim’s particular attention to the durability and light fastness of AZO makes it more stable than most recording dyes and the least affected by ultraviolet light.

    High Sensitivity

AZO also offers high sensitivity for reliable high-speed recording and high reflectivity to eliminate read/write errors. The depth of the recording layer is also critical. The thinner the layer, the higher the sensitivity and power margin; therefore, the better the DVD works for high-speed recording.

    High Quality

No interruptions on backups, production jobs or downloads! Verbatim’s AZO technology creates optical discs with one of the lowest error rates, offering reliability, maximum read and write performance, and superior archival protection that lasts.

Yes, the packaging states you can burn up to 16X, and if you''re in a rush, I guess you need to push the envelope. But - if you just slow down and burn at the slowest available speed (2X is the lowest option I have) you''ll find an amazing success rate. I shoot video for local high school musical productions and have to burn 60-80 discs per show. Using my 2008 (yes, you read that correctly) iMac, my failure rate is zero. Pretty incredible in my opinion. I''m using Burn software (free) and the video programs are approx. 117 minutes long, so it''s a full disc. At 2X I''m still cranking ''em out at 1 copy per 20 minutes. Worth the wait, as I''ve never had a single self-tested reject - or a reject from a paying customer. In my opinion, great, reliable and reasonably priced media. Hope this helps!

I have been buying these discs for years now as my brother has always told me they were the best quality for the price. I have received many bad batches lately, though. I am only able to record a few minutes or at most 30 mins. or only an hour. Sometimes they aren’t bad until you reach the bottom of the pack. Other times, like recently it’s every single one, one after another, right from the beginning of the pack. I can actually see that some of them are bad before using them. You can see the disc layers are not formed properly. Ordinarily, they work very well, but when Amazon gets bad batches, forget using these. It seems to be happening a few times a year for about the last 3 years. I’ve had to keep returning them.
I just returned 3 packs at once, but luckily my latest pack seems much better and more like the quality you normally expect from these.
    * I just wanted to update this review to say that I have since bought two more used DVD recorders that record with both DVD-R and DVD+R just so I don''t have to fool with these DVD-R discs anymore. My newest DVD recorder would only record with DVD-Rs so I was stuck buying these for several years. It is so much less frustrating to be able to use the DVD+R discs if you are able to use that format. They come in the purple packaging and work like the Verbatim brand is known for.

I have used hundreds of DVD-Rs, including the Verbatim brand, with great results. Out of the 400 Verbatim DVD-Rs, which I purchased in 2018 from Amazon, close to 70 were BAD. Using 2 different computers, the drives rejected some right away, rejected some part way through the recording process and some were not able to be read after burning. These discs are identified by "AZO" on the packaging. This does not appear on the discs themselves. Because of their "Lifetime" warranty, I contacted Verbatim and they seemed willing to help. Because of this, I never contacted Amazon about them. Verbatim asked me for a total of the bad discs and by the time I had gone through the 400, is way too late for Amazon to do anything about them. I emailed Verbatim the total a couple of times and I never heard back. I found around 50 Verbatim DVD-Rs which I had purchased a couple of years ago and didn''t have one problem disc. A few months ago, I purchased a stack of 100 "Amazon Basics" DVD-Rs and haven''t had a problem with the 50 or so I have used. I know some other people who have had the same problems as I have with the "AZO" Verbatim DVD-Rs. I would advise people to not buy these discs until Verbatim acknowledges and fixes their problems.

Terrible quality, you can even see the bumps on the bottom of the bad discs. It''s the kind of thing I''m used to with low grade store brands. Not Verbatim. The Verbatim are MCC discs. I always verify my discs after a burn. I highly suggest if you risk buying these, make sure you verify your burns. Because these discs DO burn and complete. They did for me but they fail the verification step. If you fail the verification step, it''s a bad disc that will skip.

What''s more amazing is that the last third of the discs, is where all the problem discs are. So after burning 2/3rds with success. Now I run into problems. How do I return 17 discs out of 50?

There were also errors such as dark lines from the outside in. Which is all stuff you see in low quality discs that have bad batches. This isn''t the Verbatim of quality that some may assume. This is garbage. Stay away from these and if you want to ignore what I say. At least verify your discs or you''ll be sitting on a pile of bad burns and you won''t even know it.

P.S. For what it''s worth, my successful burns (that verify as good) still get a quality rating of 0 out of 100 in Nero''s DiscSpeed "Disc Quality" test. Which means, even if you get a good burn. It may not last. They may be prone to decay quicker. Not bad now but as time goes by, they will become unusable or skip.

I needed an alternative to the TDK DVD-R disks that I used for several years. The reason for the switch was not because I was unhappy with TDK disks because TDK disks worked flawlessly. Instead, I was unable to find TDK disks on Amazon that were sold at the same price point I was accustomed to paying, and more importantly, because TDK DVD-R disks were just unavailable from virtually any vendor. It seems that TDK is no longer manufacturing these disks, and those that are available are being sold at an added premium.

With some trepidation, I sought a reliable alternative to TDK because no one wants to be using unreliable optical disks to archive computer data or to store precious photos and video files. I mention these facts because of several failures of SONY DVD-R disks I used for these purposes.

After reading Amazon reviews and taking into consideration Verbatim''s excellent reputation, I chose to use these and have been happy ever since. Why? No disk failures!

Based on my experience, I recommend use of this brand to meet most archival storage needs.

I purchased these (AZO) to use on my Mac computer. Works great! I then purchased these again, for my PC. They will not burn. I tried three different burn apps. I used a Verbatim disc that is several years old, and it worked. So, thought maybe it was just a bad batch. Exchanged them. And while waiting, I wondered if maybe my internal dvd was going bad, although Windows and Nero found no problems, but I purchased an external Dvd recorder, just in case. Got my replacement discs. Again, these would not burn with internal dvd recorder. Hooked up the new portable dvd recorder…it recorded. Tried to play it back, and get a green screen but if I move the fast forward there is a picture, until I go back to play, and it is green once again. Tried to record a few more AZO dvds but the new DVD drive said it contained data and needed to be erased. I had had one more of those 5 year old Verbatim dvd (non AZO dvds) left, put it in the internal dvd and it records just fine. I have now returned these AZO for a second time. This morning, I just read through all these reviews and saw a problem reported about AZO. So, I just checked the older Verbatims that just worked and they are not AZO. They just say Verbatim DVD-R. Is that the problem…the AZO not working with Windows hardware? (They work great with MAC but are not recording on Windows).

But I ordered these Verbatim discs recently from Amazon and they would not play back on my computer dvd drive. The computer dvd drive can''t read them and spits them out. As a test, to make sure it was not a problem with the computer dvd drive, I recorded on a Verbatim DVD-R disc that I had purchased in the past and it played back perfectly on my computer. UPDATE: it''s been a little over a month since I wrote my review, and the pack I just bought is about 1/3 gone, but I have used up all the good discs. The rest are completely covered in tiny pockmarks and scratches, and I don''t feel good about using them to back up or record anything important. I''ve also encountered several more completely failed discs with separating layers, including one that had a chip out of it about the size of a dime, but only on the top layer of plastic. This is just the most absolutely abysmal quality control I''ve ever seen in a pack of DVD Rs in the last sixteen years or so that I''ve been buying them. So I am lowering my score to 1 star, and recommending people just stay away from these Verbatim discs entirely. I''m definitely looking for another brand to get from now on, especially since these Verbatims seem to never sell for less than $25 for a 100 pack anymore anyway. I remember being able to go to Office Depot or Office Max and buy good quality DVD R discs for $15 a 100 pack on sale, and there was always a sale for some decent brand every week, but I guess since less and less people are using them now the companies are making them dirt cheap and much lower quality while also raising the prices. I have tried to avoid no-name or unknown brands in the past, but why should I trust the quality and longevity of these Verbatim discs any more than any of those brands if Verbatim can''t even make packs where almost all the discs aren''t full of scratches, pockmarks and nicks, or even just falling apart? Stay away.

Also this most recent pack is a -R variety, where as the previous pack I got before this one that had all the same issues was of the +R variety, so this is apparently a widespread problem with their entire manufacturing system, and not just limited to one style of discs.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: These Azo Verbatim DVD-R and +R discs are still probably the best quality discs you can get for the price, based on the higher price that DVD R''s go for these days, but Verbatim''s quality control has gone down the tubes in the last year or two. I started using Verbatim Azo almost exclusively maybe three years ago when the other brands I would always rotate between (based on availability, or what I could get on sale) all started giving me more failed burns, or became too overpriced. Verbatims were priced good, and always seemed to give me less failed burns per pack. The discs I burn now almost always still burn well, and pass the verification and everything, but there are now always a lot of discs in the pack just completely covered in scuffs, scratches, pockmarks, and other obvious plainly visible defects that just make them unusable for burning backups or anything that is actually important to preserve.

I''ve been using DVD R''s, both -R and +R, for a lot of years now, so I always expect a few imperfect scratched, or visually defective discs per pack, but this has started becoming more and more of a problem in the packs I''ve bought in the last year or two, and my last pack of Verbatims (a 100 pack of + discs) had at least 20 to 25 such unusable discs. I got down to the last third or so of the pack, and I wound up having to pick out the last few discs with only minor but clearly visible nicks or scratches, the kind that I would usually set aside and use for disposable or less important things, because the rest were so covered in pockmarks and scratches that they are basically just entirely unusable. I also ran into at least three discs in this pack with clear massive defects in their edge where the plastic layers were separating and the discs could be easily pulled apart by hand with almost no effort. While using those last few somewhat usable discs I also ordered a new pack (now a 100 pack of -R style because at the time the price on the +R discs I prefer was up in the $30 - $35 range for some reason) despite there still being probably 20 or more discs left in the old pack, all visibly damaged and unusable.

Now on a quick inspection this new 100 pack of - Rdiscs that I got today seems to also have a massive amount of discs with the same kind of damage on them, mainly at the top and bottom of the pile. Most of the discs towards the middle seem to be okay though. So it feels like whatever process they are using to put the discs onto the spool might now be damaging them both at the start and end of the process. Either that or there are large batches of damaged discs getting past the quality control process, and this spool wound up with some on both the top and bottom, and just a smaller chunk of good discs in the middle. Whatever the case Verbatim''s quality control now seems to be abysmal. A 100 pack of discs should not have a third or more of the discs so visibly scratched and damaged that they can just be immediately disposed of after just a quick glance. Again DVD R''s in general seem to be getting more expensive, and some companies like Sony seem to be not making them at all anymore, so the Verbatim Azo series (not their "Life" series, which are lower quality but pretty much the same price) still seems to be the best value for the overall quality of the discs, but it really sucks that their quality control on basic things like visibly pockmarked, scratched and scuffed discs is so poor that purchasing a 100 pack now feels more like a gamble on whether or not you are actually purchasing a 50-75 pack of actual usable discs. If I could find another brand that I liked as much for the same or just slightly higher price (because it would be better to pay like $30 for 100 usable discs rather than pay $25 for 70-80 usable discs out of 100) I would switch to them immediately.

Also If you are ordering these from Amazon I HIGHLY recommend ordering the "Frustration Free Packaging" version, even if it is a couple of dollars more. Then it will be automatically shipped in a box designed just for these spools of discs with actual protection. I ordered the regular version this time, because it was $1.50 less, and whoever was packaging it at Amazon just threw it in one of those grey plastic garment bags meant for shipping clothing and other things not easily damaged. It had NO protection at all, and arrived with the black plastic base of the spool shattered into many pieces. At least the broken pieces and the plastic wrapping on the spool still held the pile of discs inside the clear section, and they didn''t spill out loose in the bag. This is how I know that the damage on the discs is from the factory, and not caused by shipping. Thankfully I had my empty spool from the previous pack on hand to put the new discs on, because the new spool is broken useless, but the hassle just wasn''t worth saving that $1.50. I wasn''t worried about it when I ordered, because I have ordered both ways in the past, and the normal way usually also arrives in a box from Amazon, but from now on I will be going with the FFP version every time unless it is significantly more expensive.

No issues or problems with these discs. I read some of the other reviews and I was leery. I''ve used Verbatim for years with perhaps 15 bad disk all these years so they are among the most reliable. Now to the price issue. They are NOT cheap and have been creeping up in price. I used to be able to buy them for $20 on sale. On Amazon the price is competitive if not just a teeny bit lower than elsewhere - but still HIGH. They have a limited lifetime guarantee warranty. Can you name other DVD-R brands that offer the same? Does it matter? Yes. Why? Well most DVDs from any brand will burn and will appear just fine after the time of burning. The real test comes in the yet-to-be. Years later. This is the real issue. Time. With cheap DVDs you are likely to pay in the long term with an inability or access your files, data, media. You won''t find out today or tomorrow but in several years from now. It''s happened to me for bargains I bit into years go. Not a pleasant surprise years later. The DVDs that have given me the least grief over the years? Yes the Verbatim ones. Perhaps this is why they offer the limited lifetime warranty. Also they are made in Taiwan and that is a very very very serious plus where I am concerned. The quality and reliability shows. I''ve got the 10 years of usage to confirm this. You can use these discs in regular computer or laptop burners or you can use them in DVD recorders if you are lucky enough to still have one. Just remember for DVD recorders it depends on it''s age as to whether or not it recognizes or can burn a DVD-R and that is based in the firmware of the recorder. It is NOT THE fault of a DVD-R brand, but the firmware in the recorder. You need to stick to the speed and or brands recommended at the time the recorder came out. For much older recorders you may need to use 8x not 16x - check your recorders documentation or go on line to hunt for a manual. The good news is that amazon sells both max speeds. So I am still very pleased with the Verbatim DVD-R discs but I am growling at the increasing price. For data and files that matter I will continue to stick with Verbatim, I''ve got over 10 years of positive re-enforcement to justify my decision.

And the price is fantastic, given we paid 5$ per blank in the early 2000s, I have 1,000 Bluray blanks to use up to hahahahahaha

I''ve been using (and selling when I had a computer store) Verbatim DVD''s (and CD''s) for over 20 years and have very rarely had any problems with them. They are reliable and are rarely defective. When I had a store ALL reported problems were because of improper handling or use. I also sold other big name brands... they all had problems to the point of stopping to sell them and selling only Verbatim. I have over 1000 DVD''s and have only had 4 or 5 that were bad, can''t say that about other brands I''ve used.

Disks wouldn''t record. Tried 5 in a row took another one from the middle of the stack and same story. I also purchased the exact discs only in 50 quantity and they work perfectly.
